He Suffered For My Reward

The fabled "Stanley sound" in bluegrass gospel music passes to the third generation with the release of Nathan Stanley's He Suffered For My Reward on Third Generation Records.  The 14-year-old prodigy is the grandson of Ralph Stanley and mandolinist for his band, the Clinch Mountain Boys.  He has been performing with the band since he was four, standing at his grandfather's knee playing spoons.  Jointly produced by Stanley and his grandfather, He Suffered For My Reward features accompanying performances by renowned gospel vocalist Judy Marshall and Clinch Mountain Boys Jack Cooke (vocals and bass), James Alan Shelton (guitar), Steve Sparkman (banjo) and Dewey Brown (fiddle).  (Stanley's uncle, Ralph Stanley II, is the long-time lead singer for the Clinch Mountain Boys.)  Several songs on the new album were made famous by the Stanley Brothers (Ralph and Carter) or later by Ralph himself.  Among these are "Cry from the Cross," "Traveling the Highway Home" and "Take Your Shoes Off, Moses."  The album offers two songs-"Me And God" and "Turn Back, Turn Back"-in the a cappella style immortalized by his Grammy-winning grandfather.  Rounding out the collection are "The Blood that Stained the Old Rugged Cross," "If We Never Meet Again," "My God Is Great," "You'll Be Cast Aside," "In His Arms I'm Not Afraid," "Never Grow Old" and the title cut.  "This album is real special," says Stanley.  "It's the first one my grandfather and I made together-just him and me."  Stanley's first solo album, Sandy Ridge, was released in 2006.  You can find out more about Nathan Stanley at www.nathanstanleysmusic.com.
